CFAES Research Productivity
Dr. Gary Pierzynski, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Education
Fiscal year 2024, ending June 30, was a good year for CFAES for research productivity. We continued a steady increase in research expenditures hitting $67.2 million, a 13.5% increase over FY23 and a 50% increase over the past five years. The number of grants submitted and our success rate have been impressive. As we break down those expenditures, 35% came from federal grants, 35% from state grants, 10% from private entities, 9% as subawards from other universities, 8% from industry, and 3% from other non-federal sources. The federal and state grants do not include the capacity funds that are administered by the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station.
Intellectual property development had a strong year as well. CFAES had 27 new innovators, 3 patents granted, 28 patent filings, 5 active start up companies, and 15 licenses. We count “AUTM” deals (Association of University Technology Managers) as any intellectual property that advances beyond the initial invention disclose phase. For FY24, CFAES had 14 AUTM deals representing 31% of the university total.
Fiscal year 2025 is off to a great start with the recent announcement of the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center to be housed on the Wooster Campus, Syngenta expressing strong interest in our tomato genetics, our Grant Development Support Unit recently surpassing assistance with over 200 grant submissions in 2024, and the continued activity on grants received in previous fiscal years. All of this is possible because of our talented faculty, students and staff. Keep up the good work!

Letters of Intent for President’s Research Excellence Funding Due Oct. 16
The President's Research Excellence program provides seed support to catalyze and accelerate multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary or convergent research teams pursuing external funding. Accelerator grants of up to $50,000 for 12-month projects are awarded to small teams of 2-3 investigators from two or more distinct disciplinary perspectives that are formed to pursue curiosity-driven, high-risk, high-reward, pilot-scale research towards an identified proposal target. Catalyst grants of $150,000 - $300,000 for up to 24-month projects are awarded to medium or large teams of 3-5 investigators representing three or more distinct disciplinary perspectives that are formed to pursue high-impact research towards an identified national-leadership level or highly strategically significant proposal target.
During the fall semester, proposals are being accepted for both Accelerator and Catalyst projects, with awarded projects beginning on 1/1/25. Applications in any topic area are invited; however, during the fall cycle emphasis will be placed on space and/or defense-related research. An additional competition for Accelerator grants will occur during spring semester. Review the program and app changes for this year's cycle and submit letters of intent to apply by 10/16.

Updates to ePA-005s
The next time you receive an ePA-005 to review and approve, you’ll see updates to three sections: Foreign Affiliations, Compliance, and Responsibility. If you have questions, please reach out to your grant manager.
Foreign Affiliations
Your grant manager will be clicking “Uncertain” under Foreign Affiliations – you should update that section by clicking either “Yes” or “No.” All Yes responses to question 2 (Is this a federal sponsor or a subproject supported by federal funds?) will require additional information about foreign affiliations from each investigator listed in question 4A when signing the form. The International Engagement Team will be notified and follow up with investigators if necessary.
Compliance
Question 6 (Does this project involve any of the following compliance areas?) has added the following new items: Infectious Agents; Select Biological Agents and Toxins; and Dual Use Research of Concern. Any Yes response will generate notifications to the appropriate compliance area to provide assistance to investigators as necessary.
Statement of Responsibility
The investigators’ section has been updated to clarify that these certifications include all investigators named on the form, that possible penalties for false certifications include penalties under university policies and rules and include the responsibility of submitting required progress reports to the award sponsor. The administrative signers’ section is updated to assert that these signers confirm the investigators listed on the form have the appropriate authority to oversee the research in the proposal and clarify responsibility for disallowed costs or over-expenditures.

Apply Today for D.C. Days 2025!
The CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education and the Grant Development Support Unit (GDSU) are pleased to announce D.C. Days 2025.
This program provides an opportunity for faculty researchers from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) to become more competitive by visiting federal program officers and federal funding agencies in Washington D.C. It enables researchers to determine if their basic research concepts align with the sponsor’s mission, seek advice concerning project design and appropriate funding tracks, and better understand the peer review process.
Participants will be chosen through a competitive application process to attend the 3-day trip. Applications are accepted from any interested faculty member; however, priority is given to those with the rank of Assistant Professor (pre-tenure), especially those who have grant writing experience.
Previous attendees are welcome to apply; however, they will not be eligible for the GDSU stipend.
Applications are due January 8, 2025.
