CFAES Central Analytical Services

Dr. Gary Pierzynski, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Education

Over the past six months, the CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education (R&GE) has reorganized central analytical services offered by the Molecular and Cellular Imaging Center (MCIC) and the Service Testing and Research Laboratory (STAR Lab). This was done with considerable input from faculty users, department chairs, and the CFAES Research Advisory Committee after the retirement of the MCIC Director last year.

Central analytical services are now divided into three pillars: Bioinformatics/Microscopy, Molecular Biology, and Soil/Water/Plant Analysis. The pillars encompass the entirety of operations and services offered through MCIC and the STAR lab. Each pillar has a lead person: Jelmer Poelstra for Bioinformatics/Microscopy; Wirat Pipatpongpinyo for Molecular Biology; and Sunjeong Park for Soil/Water/Plant Analysis who report to the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Education, Dr. Gary Pierzynski.

The efficiencies gained by this reorganization will allow for better coordination of centrally supported analytical services and opportunities to enhance offerings to further support research and Extension activities. Watch for future announcements about expanded services. As a reminder, MCIC and the STAR Lab serve the entire college and university. Check out their websites to learn more about current offerings.

A graduate student shows off a bug to an ORIP intern during the 2024 CFAES Wooster Campus Tour for ORIP and SROP interns.Summer 2025 Undergraduate Research Experiences SurveyCalling all faculty who are interested in mentoring an undergraduate student as part of a CFAES summer research experience. Please complete this survey as soon as possible! We will use this information to aid in planning and matching students with labs for the summer 2025 programs.

The college will default to matching only one student per faculty member for each program (ORIP/SROP), unless funding allows. If you have available funding to sponsor additional student researchers, please indicate this in the survey.

Faculty matches will be made by the college and will generally be prioritized using the following criteria:

  • Student mentions a specific faculty member within their application;
  • Student research interest is aligned with faculty project/lab;
  • Faculty has successfully mentored a student in the past;
  • Faculty was matched with a student in the past that was unable to be funded through the program;
  • Faculty has participated in mentoring training, including but not limited to those provided through the University;
  • Faculty is actively recruiting graduate students to be funded the following academic year.

Completing this survey does not guarantee that you will be matched with a student.

Communication of student-faculty matches will be coordinated by either Alexis Didinger for ORIP or Tiffany Halsell for SROP. Where more than one student is matched with a single faculty member, we may ask you to assist us by prioritizing applicants based on their application strength for your lab.

CFAES participates in two primary summer undergraduate research experience (REU) programs, SROP and ORIP. The college will aim to sponsor one student per faculty member per program. Please indicate if you have funding available to sponsor more than one student. Note that student matches cannot be guaranteed and ultimately depend on the interests indicated in the applicant pool.

Summer Research Opportunities Program
SROP is run through the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The anticipated dates for the OSU program are May 28 to July 25. SROP is used as a graduate student recruitment tool. SROP operates at a cost share between the College and the Graduate School, allowing participation at no cost to faculty who mentor one student over the summer. If you would like to host more than one student, this cost is estimated at $5,000 per student.

OSU Research Internship Program
ORIP takes place on the CFAES Wooster Campus. ORIP targets young researchers age 18+ hoping to gain research experience over the summer. Through lab and field research, interns receive hands-on experience in data collection and analysis, project design, and scientific communication of results. This year’s program will run from May 12 to July 18. ORIP operates at a 50/50 cost share between the college and interested faculty. If more than one student is desired, you may be asked to fully fund students beyond the first match.

The Washington Monument with the Cherry Blossoms in full bloom.Apply Today for D.C. Days 2025!
The CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education and the Grant Development Support Unit (GDSU) are pleased to announce D.C. Days 2025.

This program provides an opportunity for faculty researchers from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) to become more competitive by visiting federal program officers and federal funding agencies in Washington D.C. It enables researchers to determine if their basic research concepts align with the sponsor’s mission, seek advice concerning project design and appropriate funding tracks, and better understand the peer review process.

Participants will be chosen through a competitive application process to attend the 3-day trip. Applications are accepted from any interested faculty member; however, priority is given to those with the rank of Assistant Professor (pre-tenure), especially those who have grant writing experience.

Previous attendees are welcome to apply; however, they will not be eligible for the GDSU stipend.

Applications are due January 8, 2025.
