NASA ROSES - Ecohydrology
ECOHYD focuses on interactions between water and ecosystems through the lens of the coupled water, energy, and carbon cycles. Interdisciplinary teams are invited to propose novel strategies for evaluating and improving the realism of modeled ecosystem response sequences to pulse events.

Changes to the IRB Approval Process
Dr. Gary Pierzynski, Associate Dean for Research & Graduate Education
I wanted to make you aware of some upcoming changes to the IRB approval process. OSU is switching from Buck-IRB to the Huron system and there will be a period from approximately mid-January until mid-March when new IRB protocols, annual reviews, or revisions to existing protocols will not be processed while the transition is occurring.
Those needing service from Buck-IRB before that period should try to submit to Buck-IRB prior to January 13. After January 13, protocols and reviews will not be processed until the new system is in place in March. I would further encourage people to submit well before January 13 to ensure as rapid an evaluation as possible. No doubt there will be a large number of submissions the few days before the deadline that will take some time to process. Items submitted to Buck-IRB prior to January 13 will automatically be migrated to the new system.

Summer 2025 Undergraduate Research Experiences Survey
Calling all faculty who are interested in mentoring an undergraduate student as part of a CFAES summer research experience. Please complete this survey as soon as possible! We will use this information to aid in planning and matching students with labs for the summer 2025 programs.
The college will default to matching only one student per faculty member for each program (ORIP/SROP), unless funding allows. If you have available funding to sponsor additional student researchers, please indicate this in the survey.
Faculty matches will be made by the college and will generally be prioritized using the following criteria:
- Student mentions a specific faculty member within their application;
- Student research interest is aligned with faculty project/lab;
- Faculty has successfully mentored a student in the past;
- Faculty was matched with a student in the past that was unable to be funded through the program;
- Faculty has participated in mentoring training, including but not limited to those provided through the University;
- Faculty is actively recruiting graduate students to be funded the following academic year.
Completing this survey does not guarantee that you will be matched with a student.
Communication of student-faculty matches will be coordinated by either Alexis Didinger for ORIP or Tiffany Halsell for SROP. Where more than one student is matched with a single faculty member, we may ask you to assist us by prioritizing applicants based on their application strength for your lab.
CFAES participates in two primary summer undergraduate research experience (REU) programs, SROP and ORIP. The college will aim to sponsor one student per faculty member per program. Please indicate if you have funding available to sponsor more than one student. Note that student matches cannot be guaranteed and ultimately depend on the interests indicated in the applicant pool.
Summer Research Opportunities Program
SROP is run through the Big Ten Academic Alliance. The anticipated dates for the OSU program are May 28 to July 25. SROP is used as a graduate student recruitment tool. SROP operates at a cost share between the College and the Graduate School, allowing participation at no cost to faculty who mentor one student over the summer. If you would like to host more than one student, this cost is estimated at $5,000 per student.
OSU Research Internship Program
ORIP takes place on the CFAES Wooster Campus. ORIP targets young researchers age 18+ hoping to gain research experience over the summer. Through lab and field research, interns receive hands-on experience in data collection and analysis, project design, and scientific communication of results. This year’s program will run from May 12 to July 18. ORIP operates at a 50/50 cost share between the college and interested faculty. If more than one student is desired, you may be asked to fully fund students beyond the first match.

The CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education and the Grant Development Support Unit (GDSU) are pleased to announce D.C. Days 2025.
This program provides an opportunity for faculty researchers from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) to become more competitive by visiting federal program officers and federal funding agencies in Washington D.C. It enables researchers to determine if their basic research concepts align with the sponsor’s mission, seek advice concerning project design and appropriate funding tracks, and better understand the peer review process.
Participants will be chosen through a competitive application process to attend the 3-day trip. Applications are accepted from any interested faculty member; however, priority is given to those with the rank of Assistant Professor (pre-tenure), especially those who have grant writing experience.
Previous attendees are welcome to apply; however, they will not be eligible for the GDSU stipend.
Applications are due January 8, 2025.

Co-op Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) 2025 Partner Programs
CIGLR is accepting proposals from Regional Consortium members for a suite of programs that aim to build collaborative partnerships through career development opportunities, visionary science, and impactful outreach. Postdoctoral Fellowships (full announcement) | Deadline: January 31, 2025
- Description: Up to three (3) one-year postdoctoral fellowships ($90,000 ea.) are available for projects that directly address one of CIGLR’s 4 research themes. We will also consider applications for up to 2-year fellowships ($180,000). Postdocs must be co-advised by a CIGLR consortium member and a NOAA GLERL or CIGLR Research Institute research scientist.
- Eligibility: Any mentor or postdoc at a CIGLR Regional Consortium institution or organization.
Graduate Research Fellowships (full announcement) | Deadline: January 31, 2025

- Description: Mentoring opportunities for six (6) summer internship positions are available for CIGLR consortium members to engage with NOAA GLERL and CIGLR on a student research project. CIGLR administers the fellowship program on behalf of NOAA GLERL - no direct funding is available.
- Eligibility: Any principal investigator at a CIGLR Regional Consortium institution or organization may submit a proposal. Fellowship position proposals must include co-mentorship by a NOAA or CIGLR Research Institute collaborator.
Summits and Working Groups (full announcement) | Deadline: January 31, 2025
- Description: Funding is available to support three (3) summits or working groups (up to $20,000 ea.). Summits are 2-3 day meetings of 20-30 experts from academia, NGOs, government agencies, and businesses that summarize the state of knowledge and recommend future research priorities on problems in the Great Lakes that span decadal time-scales. Working groups convene smaller groups (8-12) for up to one week to make detailed progress on more narrow Great Lakes issues with solutions on time scales of months to years.
- Eligibility: Any principal investigator at a CIGLR Regional Consortium institution or organization may submit a proposal. SWGs must include one or more NOAA GLERL representatives on the steering committee; SWGs led by CIGLR’s NGO or business partners must also include one or more academic PIs from the Regional Consortium on the steering committee.
ECO Support (full announcement) | Deadline: January 31, 2025
- Description: Funding is available to support two (2) undergraduate or graduate students ($8,000 ea.) who incorporate an engagement, career training, or outreach component into their research.
- Eligibility: Any principal investigator or student affiliated with a CIGLR Regional Consortium institution or organization.
Seed Funding (full announcement) | Deadline: no deadline
- Description: Funding (up to $12,000 ea.) is available for Regional Consortium members to initiate research on emerging issues and respond to emergencies in the Great Lakes. We broadened the former rapid fund program beyond its focus on emergency response to encompass work on emerging issues and research directions, to help provide the foundation for new research initiatives.

PIs Can Give Access to Grants in the PI Portal
If you would like one of your project staff to access a specific grant in the PI Portal to review budget items and help manage remaining spending on the grant, you can provide access by:
- Login to PI Portal. (orapps.osu.edu/piportal/home)
- Click on the Access Controls tab. To grant access to your PI Portal view, type the designee's name in the box on the left hand side of the screen.
- To add an individual to only a specific grant(s), pull up the grant(s) you wish to share. Click on the Demographics tab then click Add Grant Administrator.

Call for Proposals: Programs of Excellence in Engaged Scholarship
To support and promote high-impact engaged scholarship, the Office of Outreach and Engagement has instituted a process to certify programs of excellence in engaged scholarship. The certification process seeks to identify and certify up to 20 projects annually that demonstrate excellence in community-engaged scholarship and meet the criteria of high-impact engaged scholarship.

The Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP)
ERIK’s Research Development team will host a virtual info briefing on 12/4 at noon related to the DURIP. DURIP supports university research infrastructure essential to high-quality, Department of Defense-relevant research. Anticipated to have a February 2025 deadline, the next DURIP solicitation can be a way to acquire needed DOD-aligned instrumentation and can be as straightforward as the addition of an objective to a current project. Interested faculty should share potential ideas by 12/18 via this form.

REEport Updates to Improve Public Access
USDA Departmental Regulation (DR) 1020-006 requires all peer-reviewed, scholarly publications and digital scientific research data assets arising from unclassified scientific research supported wholly or in part by the USDA be accessible to the public, to the extent practicable. For more information, see the Public Access for NIFA-Funded Work webpage. To comply, NIFA has made updates to its Research, Extension, and Education Project Online Reporting Tool (REEport). REEport Annual Progress Reports and REEport Final Reports now include updates to two fields and six new fields. See the REEport User Guide for more information.

OVSFRDP Application Now Available
The 2025 research application for the Ohio Vegetable and Small Fruit Research and Development Program is now available. Please keep in mind that the goal of the Ohio Vegetable and Small Fruit Research and Development Program (OVSFRDP) is to improve the profitability and marketability of vegetable and small fruit crops through research and development. The grower-generated grant funds sponsor crop research supporting the development of new varieties, new cultural and pest management practices, and other activities to enhance the profitability of vegetable and small fruit crops.
The timeline this year is as follows:
January 4 - Deadline for submission of researchers’ proposal for board consideration
January 21 - OVSFRDP Operating Committee will meet to select proposals and decide on grant allocations. Recipients will be notified.
October 10 - Interim summaries or updates due.
November 7 - OVSFRDP Meeting
January 6 - Final report due. Due date extensions must be approved by OVSFRDP Operating Committee.
