2021-2022 Call for Nominations, CFAES Research Awards

The CFAES Office for Research and Graduate Education are requesting nominations for the 2021-2022 Faculty Research Awards and the William E. Krauss Award for excellence in graduate education.

The CFAES Faculty Research Awards recognize CFAES and OARDC scientists who have made outstanding research contributions in the advancement of science and technologies relating to food, agriculture, family, communities and/or the environment.

The William E. Krauss Award was established through a gift from the William E. Krauss family to recognize excellence in research performed by a doctoral student. This award recognizes a Ph.D. student that has produced a peer reviewed publication of the highest quality.

Distinguished Junior Faculty Research Award

This award is for faculty whose appointment is at the rank of Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor. The award will consist of a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize to the awardee, and a one- time allocation of $3,000 to the operating expense account of the awardee’s research project.

Distinguished Senior Faculty Research Award

This award is for faculty whose appointment is at the rank of Professor. The award will consist of a plaque and $1,000 cash prize to the awardee, and a one-time allocation of $3,000 to the operating expense account of the awardee’s research project.

Innovator of the Year Award

This award recognizes scientists who have created innovations that have or will have a major impact on agricultural production, business, rural communities, technology, or the health and well-being of animals and human beings. One award will be given each year to an individual or team. The award consists of a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize to each team member (not to exceed $5,000 for the team), and $2,500 to an operating expense account of the awardee for one year only, (not to exceed $5,000 total across all team members in the case of a team award).

William E. Krauss Director's Award for Outstanding Publication by a Graduate Student

The competition is open to all Ph.D. students who have worked on or are working on a CFAES affiliated project during the 2020 calendar year.

Distinguished International Research and Engagement Award

Nomination Packet

This award recognizes CFAES scientists who have actively engaged in international work involving teaching, research, and/or Extension which has had a substantial impact on international experiences for faculty and students, or on the country or countries hosting the projects or activities. One award will be given each year to an individual or team. The award consists of a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize to each team member (not to exceed $5,000 for the team), and $2,500 to an operating expense account of the awardee for one year only, (not to exceed $5,000 total across all team members in the case of a team award).

Distinguished Graduate Student Mentor Award

Nomination Packet

This award recognizes outstanding graduate faculty mentors who teach with passion, research with integrity, and inspire our graduate students to become the leaders of tomorrow. The competition is open to all CFAES faculty who advise graduate students. Faculty may be at any rank – Assistant, Associate, or Full – but must have a history of successfully mentoring graduate students. The award will consist of a plaque and $1,000 cash prize to the awardee.


Submission Information

Please note the updated guidelines for the Faculty and Innovator awards. Each nomination should be submitted electronically as a single PDF document on or before 5:00 PM on November 1, 2021. Nominations with missing documents will not be considered for awards. 

The Awards Review Committee will review the nominations and select the awardees. The target date for announcement of the awards is January 2022. All awards will be presented at the Annual CFAES Research Conference, date TBD. Note: each awardee will be expected to give a 10-minute synopsis of the primary research that led to the award at the Research Conference.
